Tile Refinishing Tips on Porcelain

How to Refinish Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tile can be used to line walls, floors, countertops, backsplashes, and showers. Replacing it, however, can be costly, so if the tile is still in good condition, and only has minor chips or cracks, then tile refinishing can be performed.

1. Clean the porcelain with a degreaser and a scrub brush to remove all the dirt, oils, and grime.

2. Mix the paint primer according to the color chart of the porcelain tile repair kit so it matches your porcelain tile.

3. Apply the primer to the chipped or cracked areas with a toothpick or a paintbrush. Remember to add just enough paint to cover the damaged area.

4. Apply a layer of finish paint on the tile cracks or chips, and then wait 24 hours for the paint to cure.

5. Mix a nickel-sized amount of marine epoxy on cardboard with a toothpick.

6. Pick up the epoxy with your toothpick and cover the repaired area with the epoxy, again, wait 24 hours for this to cure.

7. Cover the areas around the porcelain tile with some masking tape, including any pipes and sink faucets.

8. Apply an even layer of acetone spray to the tile, wait for it to evaporate from the surface of the tile.

9. Hold the bonding agent spray around 12 inches from the tiles and move it slowly, side to side as you spray a layer onto the porcelain tile. Overlap the spray lines, and then wait 15 minutes for the bonding agent to cure.

10.Hold the refinisher spray 8 inches above the porcelain tile and spray with a light coat of refinisher paint, in short, even strokes, and leave it to cure.
